The vehicles used on The Crosstown will feature accessible, low floors and all stations will have main entrances with elevators and escalators for passenger accessibility.

The Crosstown: A brief overview
The Eglinton-Crosstown is one of the largest transit expansion projects in North America today – and it’s happening right here in Toronto. The Province of Ontario through Metrolinx has invested $8.4 billion to fund transit projects in Toronto.
The Eglinton-Crosstown will provide rapid transit across the Eglinton corridor, linking subway lines and replacing the Scarborough RT with a modern, reliable service. The Crosstown will move passengers 60% faster than bus service today.
The 25 kilometre line will include up to 26 stations. Nineteen kilometres will run underground from Black Creek Drive to Kennedy Station. The Crosstown will continue on a structure completely separated from traffic for 6 kilometres to Scarborough City Centre.
Construction has started with tunnel launch site preparation underway at Keelesdale Park (On Eglinton avenue, between Black Creek Drive and Keele Street). Tunnelling will begin in summer 2012 and head east.

The Crosstown: Station design philosophy
Throughout the initial phase the Crosstown's station design team have spent time and care in planning. Guiding principles that have fed into the preliminary design for Dufferin Station include (These principles will be maintained with all stations on the Crosstown):
- Integration with surrounding neighbourhood: respecting the scale, size, look and feel of buildings
- Safe and enjoyable user experience: easy transfers, Designated Waiting Areas, integrated artwork and lots of lighting
- Full accessibility for users with all levels of mobility including elevators, escalators, and low-floor access

Dufferin Station Preliminary Design

The map to the right illustrates the density of current foot traffic around Dufferin and Eglinton Avenue; density is one of the primary reasons for choosing locations for stations. Higher levels of foot-traffic come from the north-east, where several apartment buildings are located.
The main station entrance (below) for Dufferin Station will be located on the south-east corner, replacing the Esso gas station that is currently occupying that space. Property acquisition is something The Crosstown takes very seriously. Our aim has been to reduce the overall footprint of each station to minimize the number of properties required.
The traction power substation and station support facilities will be located at the southwest corner of Dufferin and Eglinton in scale with the surrounding buildings.
The secondary station entrance will be located on the northwest corner of Dufferin and Eglinton Avenue. This consolidated layout reduces the overall footprint of construction and minimizes construction impacts.
Below is a preliminary representation of the entrances and station, subject to change throughout the next phases of the design process. Passengers will travel below ground to the concourse level where they will pay their fare and then down one more level to board the train.
At this early design stage, construction staging is not yet developed. Individual construction plans for each station will be developed with local consultation, well before construction. As part of the tunelling process, construction of walls for the future station box are scheduled to begin at Dufferin and Eglinton in 2013. Construction of Dufferin Station is currently scheduled to start in 2014.
