UPDATE: Retaining Wall Construction east of Brentcliffe Road

August 4, 2020


  •  To accommodate continued road widening and reconstruction along Eglinton Avenue East in support of the Crosstown LRT, a retaining wall will be constructed on the north side of Eglinton Avenue East, east of Brentcliffe Road. The retaining wall will hold and stabilize the embankment created from the newly widened road.
  •  Retaining wall construction will begin early August 2020 for a period of approximately four (4) months.


  • Retaining wall construction will begin as early as August 4, 2020 and continue for approximately four (4) months.
  • Work may occur Monday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • The contractor may not always work during the permitted hours but may do so at its discretion.
  • Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.


  • A Mechanically Stabilized Earth Concrete Segmental Retaining Wall will be constructed on the north side of Eglinton Avenue East, east of Brentcliffe Road.
  • Excavation will take place between Eglinton Avenue East and Thursfield Crescent.
  • The limit of excavation will be approximately one metre south of the existing fence line south of Thursfield Crescent.
  • The retaining wall will be constructed using concrete blocks and geogrid.
  • Noise from construction equipment, vehicles and crews can be expected.
  • Site lighting may be required.
  • Construction activities will include:

-   Excavation: Excavators, dump trucks and loaders  

-   Hydrovacing  

-   Backfill and compaction: Loader and vibratory roller/compactor

-   Concrete works: concrete trucks and pumps

-   Installation of concrete blocks with mobile crane

  • In addition to construction activity, residents can expect to see equipment and material storage within designated work zones.
  • The final landscape and restoration plans are under development, once finalized, they will be submitted for review and approval by Toronto Region and Conservation Authority and city of Toronto Ravine and Natural Feature Protection. A separate notice will be provided prior to the commencement of this work.


  • There will be no change to the existing traffic configuration, pedestrian routes or TTC stops.
