Cross Passage Construction east of Old Park Road
Cross Passage Construction east of Old Park Road
The Eglinton Crosstown is a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with an underground central section. The line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and the new service will be up to 60% faster than the bus service today.
What:
A cross passage is a small passageway built to connect the eastbound and westbound tunnels for maintenance and emergency purposes. Dewatering equipment is used at street level on Eglinton Avenue above the cross passage location. Dewatering is the process of removing groundwater from around the tunnel level below. The dewatering equipment will be in place for the duration of the building of the cross passage.
3 stages of cross passage work:
Stage 1: Drilling
Drilling of the dewatering wells in the centre lanes of Eglinton Avenue and cutting a small trench to the north curb lane (approximately one month.)
Stage 2: Dewatering
Placing a generator and a dewatering treatment tank on north side of Eglinton Avenue, requiring a short curb lane restriction (approximately six months).
Stage 3: Restoration
Removal of the equipment/wells and restoration of the roadway once the cross passage work is complete
(approximately one month.)
Where:
While the majority of work will occur underground within the tunnels, dewatering operations will be visible on the surface on Eglinton Avenue between Glen Cedar Road and Camberwell Road. The highlighted areas on the maps show the approximate location of the cross passage work.
When:
Work will begin as early as the first week of March and last approximately eight months. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic Details:
During Stage 1, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction while the work will occur in the centre lanes. During this stage, parking on Eglinton will be prohibited and used for the flow of traffic. Delays should be expected.
During Stage 2, westbound traffic will be impacted with the north curb lane restriction only. A few parking spots will be occupied by the dewatering equipment at this location.
Transit Information
For the safety of transit riders, eastbound or westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. The eastbound bus stop at Old Park is to be maintained. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.
Work Hours
Please note that dewatering pumps and or generators are required to be active 24 hours a day.
Noise and Vibration
Some noise and vibration associated with the equipment can be expected with this work.
