Toronto Finnish-Canadian Seniors Centre

Business profile:
The Suomi Koti Toronto Finnish-Canadian Seniors Centre is a residential and nursing home facility that has 88 self-contained bachelor, one, two or three bedroom apartments available to seniors on a life-lease or on a rental basis.
The ground floor of the building is comprised of commercial space that includes a medical and dental clinic, a pharmacy, and a hairdresser.
Facilities include an auditorium, cafeteria, workshop, exercise area, library, saunas, a swimming pool and a whirlpool.
Services include banking, foot care services, liaison with community groups and agencies, masseuse services, and friendly visiting for the frail and isolated elderly.
“We have many activities, including aquatics, billiards, bingo, fitness classes, woodwork and video nights.” explains Juha Mynttinen, the administrator at the Centre. “Everyone is welcome; however, all our programs are in Finnish and the cuisine is Finnish. We do have a couple of tenants who do not speak Finnish and they seem to be enjoying the experience very much.
”In the heart of Leaside, the Centre has been serving the community since 1982.
“Our waitlist is extremely long,” says Juha. “If we were to empty the whole Centre today, by tomorrow we’d be completely full again.
”Volunteers who are interested in working with seniors for a variety of activities are always welcome. Please contact the Elderly Persons Centre Co-ordinator at 416-425-4134.
