CONSTRUCTION BEGINS FOR TPSS 11:

Eglinton Avenue East at Warden Avenue

What Work is Taking Place?

As part of construction of the future surface alignment for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, crews will be excavating and building a foundation for the Traction Power Substation (TPSS) 11 that will power the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (ECLRT).  The building will be located on the east side of Warden Avenue south of Eglinton Avenue East. Work will begin as early as August 12, 2019 and lasting for approximately six (6) weeks.

There will be a sidewalk closure on the east side of Warden Avenue south of Eglinton Avenue East in order to safely carry out the work.

The work will include excavation near the TPSS 11 site, storm line, catch basin, electrical, communication duct banks, wet utility insillation and cutting and removing of asphalt. Heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks and concrerte trucks will be on site.

What is a traction power substation?

  • A TPSS is a steel building similar in size to a shipping container.
  • It provides electrical power to the LRT via the overheard catenary system used to power the trains. A TPSS converts electricity from the local power source to the levels needed by the vehicles.
  •  A TPSS is a safe structure that will not introduce any new risk to the community in which it is constructed.
  • All TPSS structures are air-conditioned and therefore emit a low humming noise, similar to a residential air conditioner.
