What is the Crosstown?
The Eglinton Crosstown is a 19 kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with an underground central section. The line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and the new service will be up to 60% faster than the bus service today.
What phase of work is starting in the vicinity of Chaplin Crescent?
Station headwalls create the frame for future underground stations, and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route. Construction of the headwalls requires a grout plant to be established nearby to pump a form of concrete, otherwise known as “grout”, to the station headwall location.
In order to minimize road occupancy on Eglinton Avenue West, the grout plant site will be situated on Metrolinx-owned property and occupy a portion of roadway at Gilgorm Road. A fence will enclose the site to separate the site from the public roadway. The plant will enable headwall construction for Chaplin Station and cross-passages. The grout plant is expected to be in place for approximately eight to ten months.

What: Crews will be building headwalls for the future Chaplin Station and cross-passages for the future maintenance of the tunnel. Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the station location. Following the site preparation, crews will be installing these underground station headwalls in advance of the twin tunnel construction.
Where: The work zone will extend from approximately east of Spadina Road to Heddington Avenue along Eglinton Avenue West. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing.
When: Construction is expected from spring to late fall of 2014. Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Work will take place in two stages.
Changing Traffic Patterns
Traffic patterns in the area will continue to change and shift during different phases of the work. During the first stage of construction, a work site will set up on the north side of Eglinton Avenue. Traffic lanes will remain open on the south side of Eglinton with one lane in each direction. There will be impacts and/or restrictions to through-traffic northbound and southbound on Chaplin Crescent at Eglinton Avenue for more than eight months.
More details on traffic will be provided in a separate notice when the plan is finalized.

Initial preparations could require rolling (short term) lane restrictions on Eglinton Avenue for installation of grout lines and utility investigation.
Traffic delays are expected during construction. Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Pedestrian walkways will remain open. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.
Transforming transit across the middle of Toronto will involve significant road works. Construction will be visible along the corridor and on some side streets. There will be short-term local street closures and turning restrictions to allow for the construction to take place. Metrolinx, City of Toronto staff and your elected officials are working closely together to monitor and make adjustments to the local road configurations, work zones and other day to day items such as signage and temporary adjustments.
Transit Information
For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.

Work Hours
The hours of work as permitted by the by-law for this contract are between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., 7 days a week, when required. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion. For this location, the contractor could be working on Saturdays and extending their usual work day until 7pm in the evenings.
