Did You Know?
In addition to the 25 stations and stops being built for the Eglinton Crosstown, other very important structures like emergency exit buildings and cross passages are being built along the route.
What is an Emergency Exit Building?
Emergency Exit Buildings (EEB) are built in between the stations when station platforms are more than approximately 760 metres apart to allow for easy evacuation of passengers. The construction of an emergency exit building includes the building of an evacuation pathway, a set of stairs from the tunnel to ground level, and a small building on the surface. The scale of construction is similar to building a smallscale underground station. Generally, it takes up to 24 months to complete construction at each EEB.
What is a Cross Passage?
A cross passage is a tunnel connecting the eastbound and westbound tunnels for maintenance and/or emergency purposes. Crews will be building cross passages after the tunnels have passed each location. Some construction works will be visible at street level while most work takes place underground.
Where will these structures be built in the central part of Eglinton?
There are a few areas along Eglinton Avenue where the emergency exit buildings and cross passages will be built. In total, one emergency exit building and three cross passages will be built between Avenue Road and Bayview Avenue. The map on the previous page shows the locations where these important structures will be built.
When will construction work start?
Cross passage and emergency exit construction will take place between late 2014 through late 2016.
Changing Traffic Patterns
Traffic patterns in the area will continue to shift during different phases of the work. Traffic lanes will remain open with one lane in each direction across Eglinton Avenue. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Please take care when travelling near construction areas. To ensure safety of pedestrians in the vicinity of the construction zone, temporary detour of pedestrian sidewalks may be required. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.
More details on traffic will be provided in separate notices when the staging plan in each area is finalized.
Transforming transit across the middle of Toronto will involve significant road work. Construction will be visible along the corridor and on some side streets. There will be local street closures and turning restrictions to allow for the construction to take place. Metrolinx, City of Toronto staff and your elected officials are working closely together to monitor and make adjustments to local road configurations, work zones and other day-to-day items such as signage and temporary adjustments.
Transit Information
For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area may be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating any new locations.
Work Hours
Most of the work will be carried out between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., 7 days a week. In certain situations, some late night and/or early morning works may be required to complete the work.
The contractor will not always be working during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.
