What we are building
What: A cross passage is a smaller tunnel placed between two other parallel tunnels for maintenance or emergency purposes. Crews will be building one headwall for the cross-passage required for future maintenance of the tunnels. Headwalls are underground support walls.
Why: Headwalls create the frame for future cross passages and/or stations, and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines along the Eglinton Crosstown route. Construction of the headwall requires a grout plant and grout lines to be established nearby to pump a form of concrete, otherwise known as “grout”, to the headwall location. During this stage of construction, the work zone will switch to the south side of Eglinton.
Where: The work zone will extend from approximately east of Gardiner Road to east of Mayfair Avenue along Eglinton Avenue West. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing. Various traffic control measures and construction zones will occupy the Eglinton Avenue at Vesta Drive.
When: A new traffic pattern for the construction of the headwall will start as early as September 2014. Construction is expected to continue to late fall of 2014. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
- Traffic lanes on Eglinton Avenue will remain as one lane in each direction, while construction is set up on the south side of Eglinton Avenue from east of Gardiner Road to east of Mayfair Avenue.
- For this stage of construction, there will be no restrictions to turn into the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute entrance. Right turns and left turns will be permitted.
- Right- turns onto Vesta Drive from the eastbound direction will be permitted
- Right- turns onto Old Forest Hill Road from the eastbound direction will be permitted
