May 26, 2014

Starting as early as the first week of June  The Eglinton Crosstown is a transit project that will provide rapid and reliable service across Eglinton Avenue. It includes an underground central section from Keele Street to Laird Drive, bring transit service that will be up to 60% faster than bus service today.

What we are building

When: Starting as early as the first week of June 2014, crews will occupy the south side of Eglinton roadway for several months to install station headwalls and relocate utilities. Some work may be rescheduled due to weather.

Where: In this stage, crews will be working on the south side of Eglinton Avenue extending from east of Kirknewton Road and east of Dufferin Street, as they begin the long term work for headwall installation and the utility relocation work. Barriers and protective fencing will be used as needed to separate the work zone from the traffic.

What: Crews will be relocating various utilities such as water mains, sewers, and communications lines for the construction of the Dufferin Station headwalls. Following the relocation of utilities, crews will be installing these underground station headwalls in advance of the twin tunnel construction.

Why: These station headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route.  Construction of the headwalls requires the utilities to be moved safely out of the way during the installation of the headwalls.

Traffic Details

On the north side of Eglinton Avenue, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Dufferin Street, extending from the east of Kirknewtown Road to the east of Dufferin Street.

Right hand turns southbound from Dufferin Street onto Eglinton Avenue will be permitted.

Pedestrian Access

Pedestrian walkways will remain open. During construction, some sidewalks will be closed for public safety, please watch for additional signs re-directing pedestrians. Please take care when travelling near construction areas.

Transit Stop Relocations

Both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated for the safety of the transit riders. Please look for posted signs indicating the new locations.

On-street Parking Restrictions

On-street parking will not be available within the vicinity of construction. To alleviate the loss of parking on Eglinton Avenue during construction, the City of Toronto in collaboration with Metrolinx will be adjusting the parking restrictions in certain sections to accommodate parking for the neighbourhood and business.

The parking hours of the following residential streets will be extended from one hour to three hours:

  • Locksley Avenue
  • Dynevor Road
  • Fairbank Avenue
  • Hartley Avenue
  • Miranda Avenue
  • Vaughan Road
  • Livingstone Avenue

Access to the Green Parking Lot at Shortt Street will remain open.
