What Work is Taking Place?

The Eglinton roadway is changing as work continues to prepare for the construction of the surface section of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT that will run down the centre of Eglinton Avenue East in dedicated transit lanes at street level.  Setting up the construction work zones in the roadway will require changes to how car and truck, bus, and pedestrian traffic flows along Eglinton Avenue East and the associated intersections where future stops will be located.

To prepare for the construction of the surface section and future road widening, beginning as early as late-February 2018, crews will relocate and upgrade existing overhead hydro utilities between Bermondsey Rd and Birchmount Road, including approximately 100m north and south of Eglinton Avenue East on Bermondsey Rd, Jonesville Cres, and Victoria Park Ave.. Existing overhead and underground hydro lines will be relocated from the north side of Eglinton Avenue East to the south side of Eglinton Avenue East.

Outages will be required to switch services to the new infrastructure. Outage requirements and impacts will be communicated separately only to those directly impacted.

Timing

  • Beginning as early as late-February 2018 for approximately eight (8) months.
  • This work may take place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • The contractor may not always work during the permitted hours, but may do so at its discretion.
  • This work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Updates on works taking place during overnight periods will be communicated separately.

What to Expect

  • Beginning at Bermondsey Rd/Sloane Ave and moving eastward, crews will be installing new poles, wires, transformers, and switches on the south side of Eglinton Avenue East, followed by trenching of new duct banks across Eglinton Avenue East to connect to existing infrastructure.
  • New poles, wires, transformers and switches will also be installed on Bermondsey Rd/Sloane Ave, Jonesville Cres, and Victoria Park Ave.
  • Nearby businesses and residents can expect noise from excavators, bobcats, trucks and other construction equipment caused by utilities relocation activity.
Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts
  • Temporary, short duration single lane occupancy (approximately 30 minute intervals) will be required along Eglinton Avenue East, Bermondsey Rd, Jonesville Cres and Victoria Park Ave, moving eastward from Bermondsey Rd.
  • Two through lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained.
  • Pedestrian and property access will be maintained.
  • As always, please take care when travelling near work sites.
TTC Impacts
  • TTC bus stops in the affected area may be relocated for the safety of transit riders. Please watch for posted signs indicating the adjusted locations.
  • Relocation and re-routing of bus stops is done in consultation between TTC and Metrolinx to ensure construction can continue safely while minimizing impact on the community and customers.
