Donlea Drive/Leaside High School Property & Eglinton Avenue East
The Eglinton Crosstown is a transit project that will provide rapid and reliable service across Eglinton Avenue. It includes an underground central section from Keele Street to Laird Drive, and will bring transit service that will be up to 60% faster than bus service today.
What work is starting?
What: Preliminary construction works related to the construction of the Emergency Exit Building at Eglinton near Donlea Drive are required. This work includes locating underground utilities beneath the Eglinton Avenue roadway and in the vicinity.
Emergency exit buildings are used to evacuate passengers from tunnels in the event of an emergency at track level during operation. The image below indicates that the emergency exit building will be built close to Donlea Drive.
When: Starting as early as February 3, 2014, crews will temporarily occupy north and south lanes of Eglinton Avenue to conduct preliminary utility works prior to commencing longer-term emergency exit building construction anticipated in March 2014.
Tree Removal & Protection:
Trees will be removed to make way for utility relocation and the construction of various structures connected with the twin tunnels for the Eglinton Crosstown. The project has obtained all appropriate permissions and permits to remove selected trees which are in conflict with the tunnel construction. Tree protection will also be installed around selected trees that are near the various construction sites.
The construction of the Emergency Exit Building located near Hannah Road will require approximately 16 trees for removal along the south side of Eglinton Avenue East.
Traffic Details
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction within the vicinity of the work. Short term lane closures will allow the crews to perform their work safely. Please take care when travelling near construction areas.
Work Hours
The hours of work anticipated for these preliminary works are between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Work is expected to take place Monday through Saturday.
