What Work is Taking Place?

In December 2018, crews began installation of a new storm sewer along the south side of Eglinton Avenue East.  Beginning March 8, storm sewer installation will resume.  The storm sewer will be installed using a hand-mining method whereby pipe is hydraulically pushed through the soil from the shafts at Taunton Road and Brownlow Avenue while soil is simultaneously removed.  Once the pipe installation is complete, connection work will be performed to connect the new storm sewer to the existing storm infrastructure.

This work will be completed in three stages on a 24-hour basis, Monday through Friday for approximately two weeks per stage.

Construction Sequence and Staging

Stage 1 – Taunton Road (24 hours)

Monday March 12 for approximately ten (10) days

Crews will begin installation of the storm sewer pipe from the Taunton Rd shaft, travelling westbound below-grade toward Mt. Pleasant Rd.

Stage 2 – Brownlow Avenue (24 hours)

Monday April 2 for approximately ten (10) days

Crews will begin installation of the storm sewer pipe from the Brownlow Ave shaft, travelling eastbound below-grade toward Mt. Pleasant Rd.

Stage 3 – Connection Work (7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.)

Mid-April 2018

In early April crews will implement a new traffic stage at Mt. Pleasant Rd and Eglinton Ave E.  Connection work will be completed within the new work zone during permitted hours.

Hours of Work

  • Stages 1 and 2 will be completed on 24-hour basis, Monday through Friday.
  • Stage 3 will be completed between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

What to Expect

  • Overnight construction activity can be expected, including:
    • noise from construction surface equipment, including generators and hydraulic pumps
    • noise from truck activity
    • site lighting from the shaft and site trailer
  • The site trailer will remain at the Taunton Rd site for the duration of the work (stages 1 through 3).

Traffic Details

  • During stages 1 and 2, pedestrians will be rerouted around the Brownlow Ave site; access to 223 Eglinton Ave E will be maintained.
  • Upon completion of stage 3, in approximately early May 2018, the Taunton site will be demobilized and closed.

Pedestrian Details

  • Pedestrians will be re-routed around the construction zone for safety; however, access to Eglinton Avenue East will not be impacted.
  • Signage will be placed to advise pedestrians of any changes.
  • Pedestrians can expect some delays when travelling through the work zone.
  • As always, please take care when travelling near work sites.
