What we are building

What: Since October 2014, crews have been building headwalls for the future Bathurst Station ahead of the arrival of the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the underground station.

Why: Station headwalls create the frame for future underground stations and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of the TBMs at each of the station locations along the future Eglinton Crosstown line. Construction of the headwalls requires a jet grout plant to be established nearby to pump grout, a form of concrete and water, to the station headwall location. The jet grout plant for the future Bathurst Station is located at Peveril Hill Road and Eglinton Avenue West.

When: To support this work, a new traffic pattern will be implemented this month. Construction is expected to continue until late spring 2015. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Restoration of the neighbourhood will follow upon completion of headwall installation in late spring.

Where: The work zone will extend from approximately east of Chiltern Hill Road to Old Forest Hill Road along Eglinton Avenue West. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing on the south side of the street. Various traffic control measures and construction zones will be situated near the intersection of Bathurst and Eglinton and shift in location over the coming months for the construction of the two station headwalls.

Traffic Details

Peveril Hill North Closure: The work site at the north end of Peveril Hill that includes the jet grout plant used for the construction of the headwalls will continue to remain active until late spring 2015. Peveril Hill North will continue to be closed to and from Eglinton Avenue for the duration of headwall construction.

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst Street starting from Chiltern Hill to Old Forest Hill Road.
  • Left turns are permitted at the Bathurst intersection in all directions.
  • On-street parking will not be permitted within the work zones.
  • Expect detours and sidewalk closures on the south side of the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst Street. A chain link fence will separate pedestrians from construction zones.

Traffic delays are expected during construction.  Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.

Transit Information

For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.

Noise and Vibration

Noise and vibration associated with construction can be expected with this work.

Work Hours

Most of the work will be carried out between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., 7 days a week. In certain situations, some late night and/or early morning works may be required to complete the work and keep construction moving.  The contractor will not always work during extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.

We thank you for your continued patience as we work to build rapid transit.
